My Top 5 Favorite Rock Movies

The Beatle's Help
by Richard Lester

The Beatles are all living together in their funky little pad in London. One night as they slept a sacrificial ring was slipped on Ringo's finger. This by default marks him to be sacrificed to this zany cult's god. May not sound like a nice Beatles movie, but it is. They spend the movie helping Ringo to not get snuffed, and hopefully get the ringo off all together.

Tommy
by Ken Russel

The Who's Tommy album done in a film format. A stylistic and engaging, sometimes a bit disturbing story about a deaf dumb and blind boy. All star cast with not only all of the members of The Who, but other rockers and well known actors. Ann-Margret received a Golden Globe Award for her performance, and was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Pete Townshend was also nominated for an Oscar for his work in scoring and adapting the music for the film.

The Rutles
by Gary Weis and Eric Idle

This is another mockumentary, this time paralleling the career of the Beatles with some of the guys from Monty Python. They conquer just about every Beatles joke and myth, including the Paul is dead hoax. Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, and George Harrison make guest appearances. They made a sequel called "The Rutles: Can't Buy Me Lunch" but the first one is much better.

End of the century: The story of The Ramones
by Jim Fields and Michael Gramaglia

The best Ramones documentary out there. It begins with Joey Ramone growing up in Forest Hills and how rock and roll was his salvation. In his process of pursuing rock and roll he met the other guys that ended up being The Ramones. Great interviews with Joey's own mom, Joe Strummer, Debbie Harry, and Mickey Leigh. This movie includes a lot of interesting information on the Ramones personal lives. Including Linda and Joey's relationship that ended when she left him for Johnny, Dee Dee's stint as a male prostitute, Joey's OCD and the band's overall drama.

Hedwig and The Angry Inch
by John Cameron Mitchell

A transgender rock star who grows up inspired by the music of Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and David Bowie. A young man who gets a sex change to marry a man and leave Germany for America. Not long after he arrives, his husband leaves him and the Berlin wall falls. He starts a band with his new gender identity and is eventually ripped off by a pupil who is also his lover.
